Moving house with children

How much your children are involved in the removal process depends on your individual circumstances.

Experts tell mixed stories about the best time of year to move but at no time is considered planning of your removal more important than when children or young adults are involved.

Listed below are just a few general tips we have put together for you to consider. But bear in mind children of different ages require different approaches!

  • Careful planning with consistent communication and appropriate inclusion of family members.
  • Experts recommend an early announcement of your moving plans to all family members for them to adjust to the idea.
  • Be prepared for a mixed reaction. Older children will want to know different things from your younger children.
  • Prepare your children and talk to them about their concerns in advance of your move date.
  • Young children are usually happy to watch their belongings being moved as long as they know where they are moving to! Have you explained the removal day process to your young children?
  • If appropriate, give them tasks and responsibilities which will include them in the process both before, during and after the move.
  • You may wish to consider a carer for your very young children whilst the removal is taking place.
  • If you are moving area it is especially important for your children’s medical records to be forwarded to their new doctor.  It is possible for you to request copies of medical records which you could keep in a well marked file or folder.

There are many sources of information available regarding preparing your family for your move, but above all try to approach the day with careful planning and lots of communication as well as a good sense of humour!
