Moving house with pets

Pets are sensitive members of the household and to ensure your pet is moved to its new home as comfortably and securely as possible, here is a list of things to remember when you’re moving house

  • Do not feed your pet for at least three hours before transportation.
  • Make your pet comfortable in a safe and quiet room so they can’t escape — perhaps with a favourite toy and some bedding
  • Put a sign on the door saying ‘KEEP SHUT’ or ‘DO NOT ENTER’.
  • Make the removal team aware of which room your pet is being kept in.
  • If you are planning to transport your pet in a cage ensure they are accustomed to it before your move day.
  • Don’t forget the essentials needed to take care of your pet: food, water, can-opener if required, a leash, a few treats and a favourite toy with the bedding, a scooper and plastic bags and a cloth/newspaper to help clean up!
  • Take your dog for a walk.
  • Cover the cages of small animals or birds with a cloth.
  • Your pet may be comforted by having a piece of cloth with your scent on it to accompany them on the journey.
  • Give your pet plenty of fresh water at every stop.
  • Be aware that birds are sensitive to sudden changes in temperature.
  • Check with your pet supplier for recommendations regarding moving your fish.
